M70 windows, explained

The M70 is VEKA's 70 mm multi-chamber window system and the basis of every PVCu casement, tilt and turn and bay window we make. It replaced the classic Matrix 70 with a fully updated profile that improves thermal performance, security and weather resistance. We fabricate it at our factory in Pyle to your sizes, in white, colour or woodgrain, with the glazing and hardware specified for the energy rating and security you need.

The M70 builds on the qualities that made its predecessor a modern classic. Its 70 mm frame is divided into five internal chambers, which is what gives the window its thermal performance: VEKA publish U-values down to 1.2 W/m²K with double glazing and 0.86 W/m²K with triple glazing, calculated to EN 14351-1. With the right glass and hardware the window achieves a Window Energy Rating of A, and A++ is possible.

Security is designed into the profile rather than added afterwards. The frame is reinforced with steel or aluminium so it stays straight and true for decades, and the system is tested to PAS 24, the industry standard for door and window security, with the capability to meet Secured by Design, the UK police initiative for designing out crime. The M70 is compatible with locks, hinges and handles from all the major hardware manufacturers, including MACO, Yale, DGS, Nico, Fullex and Millenco.

Weather performance is equally well proven: air permeability Class 4, water tightness Class 8A and wind resistance to 2400 Pa. Unlike timber, the frame will not warp, swell or rot, and the only maintenance it needs is an occasional wash.

We make the M70 as fixed lights, side-hung and top-hung casements, tilt and turn windows, and bay and bow arrangements, with a choice of 55, 67 or 80 mm outer frames to suit new build, replacement and bay work. Colours come from the VEKA Variations and SPECTRAL ranges: smooth colours, woodgrain foils, and dual colour with one finish outside and another inside.

Why choose M70 windows

Keeps heat in

Five internal chambers and your choice of double or triple glazing. U-values from 1.2 W/m²K double glazed.

PAS 24 security

Reinforced frames, multi-point locking and PAS 24 certification, with Secured by Design capability.

Proven in weather

Class 4 air permeability, Class 8A water tightness and 2400 Pa wind resistance.

No painting, ever

PVCu will not rot, warp or need repainting. VEKA quote an expected lifespan of 35 years and the profile is recyclable.

Colour and woodgrain

Smooth colours and realistic woodgrains from the Variations range, including dual colour inside and out.

Any style, your sizes

Casement, tilt and turn, fixed, bay and bow, with Georgian bars and decorative options where a period look is wanted.

Thermal performance

Designed around five chambers

Each chamber in the M70 profile traps a pocket of still air between the outside and the room, and the deeper the chamber structure the less heat escapes through the frame. Combined with a warm-edge double glazed unit the window achieves an A rating; with triple glazing the frame U-value falls to 0.86 W/m²K.

We will recommend the glass specification for each elevation, because a north-facing window and a south-facing one do not always want the same unit.

Security

A formidable barrier

The M70 meets PAS 24, the design standard for door and window security, and can be specified to Secured by Design. Metal reinforcement inside the frame, shoot-bolt or espagnolette locking and hinge-side security keep the sash locked into the frame from all sides.

Because the system is compatible with the major hardware brands, trade customers can specify the handles and locks their installations already use.

Styles

Casement, tilt and turn, bay

Side-hung and top-hung casements are the mainstay of British housing. Tilt and turn sashes tip inwards for ventilation and swing fully open for cleaning from inside, which makes them the sensible choice for upper floors and flats. Bay and bow windows are made with structural corner posts and 80 mm frames where the load requires it.

Specifications

Figures are published by the systems manufacturer for the profile system. Performance of a finished window or door depends on size, glazing and hardware; we confirm the specification on your quotation.

Tilts inward from the top for ventilation; turns inward on side hinges for cleaning.

Fixed light

Non-opening glazed frame, used alone or combined with openers in a multi-light window.

Bay and bow

Three or more frames joined on bay posts at 90°, 135° or 150°, or a gentle bow.

If you are replacing tired timber or early PVCu windows, the M70 is the window most of our homeowner customers choose. It looks right on everything from a 1930s semi to a new build, in white or in one of the colours and woodgrains that have become popular in South Wales, particularly Anthracite Grey outside with white inside. We measure, manufacture and install, and because the frames are made a few miles away you deal with the people who make them.

You will want to think about three things: the opening style for each room (egress hinges are required for bedroom escape windows), the glass (an A-rated double glazed unit is the usual choice; triple glazing or acoustic glass where noise or heating bills are a concern), and the hardware colour. We will talk you through all of it when we visit.

Questions about M70 windows

All questions

Should I choose PVCu or aluminium?

Both are good materials and we make both. PVCu is the more economical choice, has excellent thermal performance from its multi-chamber frame, and suits most houses in white, colour or woodgrain. Aluminium is stronger, so it carries larger panes on slimmer frames, and it is powder coated in any RAL colour. For windows and standard patio doors most homeowners choose PVCu; for bifolding and large sliding doors aluminium is usually the better engineering choice. Our guide on PVCu or aluminium goes into more detail.

What is a U-value and what should I look for?

A U-value measures how quickly heat passes through a window or door: the lower the number, the better the insulation. It is expressed in W/m²K. Current Building Regulations in Wales set maximum U-values for replacement windows and doors, and the systems we fabricate all meet them. As a guide, the VEKA M70 achieves down to 1.2 W/m²K double glazed and 0.86 W/m²K triple glazed, and the Smart Visoglide Plus reaches 1.1 W/m²K with upgrade profiles. The glass unit makes the biggest difference, so tell us if heat loss is a priority.

What do PAS 24 and Secured by Design mean?

PAS 24 is the British security standard for doors and windows. A PAS 24 product has passed physical attack tests on the frame, locks and hinges. Secured by Design is the UK police initiative that specifies PAS 24 products together with other measures for new homes. All of the window and door systems we fabricate are PAS 24 tested, and the VEKA and Smart systems are capable of meeting Secured by Design when specified with the appropriate hardware and glass.

Is triple glazing worth it?

Triple glazing lowers the U-value of the whole window and reduces noise, at extra cost and weight. It is worth considering for rooms that are hard to heat, north-facing elevations and houses near busy roads. For most South Wales homes a good A-rated double glazed unit is the sensible choice. The M70, Imagine patio door, Visofold and Visoglide systems all accept triple glazed units, so the option is open on any of our products.

Can I have a different colour inside and outside?

Yes. Dual colour is available on the VEKA PVCu systems (a woodgrain or colour foil outside with white inside is the usual request) and on the Smart aluminium systems, where inside and outside faces can be powder coated in different RAL colours. Tell us both colours when you ask for a quotation.

“KNM were recommended to us so I thought I'd visit their office in Pyle to get a quote. I was shown around the factory which looked impressive and well organised - a good start. Their quote was competitive and I got a good feeling so we went with them. We weren't disappointed. Tony and John worked hard, were professional and cleaned up as they went along. We are very pleased with the windows, one of which is 4.9m in width. The windows are of a high quality, sturdy construction and we would definitely recommend KNM, they ticked all the boxes for us.”
